This is the first of my projects putting to use my grandmother's vintage pin collection. (See the whole collection here.) I got inspired by Glamourai to make some big chunky thing out of them. I separated out the silver pins.
Then I went online and looked for images of bib necklaces. I liked the shape of this one and printed it out on 8 1/2 by 11 paper.
I laid my pins out on the photo to see if this shape and size would work. I held the printout up to a window and traced the outline slightly larger (since I wanted a larger necklace) and cut it out to make my pattern.
I cut out a piece of felt using the pattern. I then used leftover fabric from my shirt pillow project. I pinned the pattern to the fabric and cut out two bib shapes, adding half an inch for a seam allowance. I sewed the pieces togther, wrong sides facing out, leaving the top ends of the bib open (where the ribbon would go.) I glued the felt to one piece and then turned the bib right side out.
For a better explanation, see this tutorial at CraftStylish.
I cut two pieces of silver ribbon about 18 inches long.
I pinned both ribbons in place and then stitched the two seams.
I cut two pieces of silver ribbon about 18 inches long.
I tucked the raw edges of the bib under and inserted the ribbon.
I pinned both ribbons in place and then stitched the two seams.
I used clip-on earrings to hide the stitching.
I then slowly and carefully pinned everything on, starting with the larger pins. I filled in the gaps with the smaller pins. I folded down the other end of the ribbons and stitched to prevent raveling.
Below is the finished product. Mr. Bromeliad thinks it's too big and too much. (Ironically, I thought necklace would be too small when I started out.) If someone tossed me into a pond, I'd drown from the weight of it.
What do you think? Make it smaller? Or do they call it a statement necklace for a reason? If so, what am I saying?

I've never worn anything like it, but I think it looks chic. Well done!
ReplyDeleteVery unique! I love the shape you picked out~ it's beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteYour creativity knows no bounds. With these bib necklaces, the bigger the better so I think the size is perfect. Happy new year, Samantha. I look forward to seeing what you cook up next year.
ReplyDeleteI would never have thought of this - your grandmother would surely be very proud!
ReplyDeleteWow - you did a fantastic job! I love the size of it and I think it looks great!
ReplyDeletei think it's a great necklace and a really fantastic idea. i adore vintage brooches and this is a way i could wear more than one at a time!
ReplyDeleteI think it's stunning. Vintage costume jewelry is fabulous and especially when it comes with fond memories of your Grandmother. It may be cumbersome to wear but you could always put it in your closet on display. I've been thinking about making a neck display myself (similar to the professional ones) but I haven't quite figured it out. Any ideas? Your blog is right up my alley-just discovered it today.
ReplyDeleteYes it's too big - I think each pin has enough personality to stand alone. With that said you have incredible talent and personality - Mr Bromeliad
ReplyDeletejust made a bunch of yo-yo's, but was trying to figure out a nice way to have them in bib formation. your blog entry fits the bill! thanks, Julia
ReplyDeleteI think it's a terrific idea and it looks awesome! What's so great about this is that you can remove the pins to use in other creative embelishments - like what I like to call "button brooches."
ReplyDeleteHey, Mr. Bromeliad, stop spamming our blog. :)
ReplyDeleteKathy, are you talking about some kind of form (almost like a dress form but just the neck) for displaying necklaces? I would like to think of something like that, too. (So I have a place to admire my five-pound necklaces when it's not on my neck.) If I come up with something, I'll let you know.
Looks great - reminds me of the jewelry Ranjana Khan and her husband Naeem had on the runways. I adore it...have you seen their work before?

Thanks. I take that as a compliment. Now I just need one of their glammy little dresses.
ReplyDeleteI love it!!!! great job and such a cool use for inherited jewelry!
ReplyDeleteThe size is so perfect but I am sure you figured that out already. You've done those pins proud and that's such a creative use of them.
ReplyDeleteVery nice and the fabric you chose for the base blends in well with the brooches. I don't know how well it would go west of the Hudson River but in New York it would be such a fashion statement! Good for you.
ReplyDeleteGeorgia Browne
It looks fabulous. Maybe a little heavy for California weather, but so many are wearing that style today. I love it. Even if I do live in California
ReplyDeleteVery unique! I love the shape you picked out~ it's beautiful!!

This is beautiful! I'm sure it would be spectacular when coupled with a simple dress, something summery with spaghetti straps or a sheath dress of some sort -- something that will leave you looking stunning and sleak and let your necklace do all the talking.
ReplyDeleteFABULOUS tutorial!! This is on my list of to-do's, for sure. Love your blog, lady!
ReplyDeleteI think you did a great job! I make necklaces like this too. If ur on facebook you can check mine out....I now sell them to friends & family. I think my favorite part is; would be the hunt of the vintage gems. I hope you enjoy creating new pieces because I look forward to seeing them.

ReplyDeleteI just love vintage bling. This necklace really makes a statement and is so unique. Your tutorial is great too.
ReplyDeleteStunning! I've also tried making a bib necklace and the bit that didn't work for me was that I tried to use on piece of fabric for the backing AND the tie. I need to cut that off and use ribbon instead. Thanks for sharing.
