This weekend marks the unofficial start of summer in the States. It was steaming hot and very busy this weekend.

I did squeeze in some shibori. (I love throwing that out there.) For my Pennsylvania Dutch readers, shibori is not a food.

Swarovski giveaway

You were probably hoping I was giving away some Swarovski crystals, which was a mean trick but ... I am giving something Swarovski away.

Swarovski Elements, which produces loose crystals for designers and DIYers high and low, creates an annual in-house magazine. They gave me two magazines, one to look at and one to give away. So you can own something straight from Swarovski without being a princess or a pop star.

Some of you may be familiar with Create Your Style, where Swarovski posts inspiration and tutorials for jewelry, home decor and accessory DIY projects.

You can see a digital preview of the magazine here at Create Your Style, which includes some of the tutorials.

The magazine is 135-pages of thick-papered crystal lusciousness designed to inspire you to great heights of jewel-encrusted creativity. It includes tutorials for 10 projects and revolves around the theme of music.

This one caught my eye since it invokes my love affair with all things rope and cord. I would feel very Orly Genger making this.

My DIY water art

I've been wanting some underwater/sea type artwork and got inspired by this DIY from Little Pink Monster below. She cut up a poster over six frames.

Not too long ago I picked up a set of brushed metal frames from the sidewalk of Hicks Street. (also a set of nesting tables. Thank you generous Brooklyn Heights neighbors.) The pictures were originally $50 each from Bed, Bath and Beyond. I wasn't feeling the martini artwork, though.

I got a large print made of a photo we took of a swimming pool in Mauritius. I cut the print in half and had it matted and put in the free frames.

After three years my tiny bathroom now has art.

If your neighbors aren't throwing out quality home decor items, you could duplicate this artwork below with a water-themed poster and several dollar store foam core boards. Heather at Dollar Store Crafts shows you how to mount a poster for a buck.

I would totally be doing this if I had more walls.

My DIY jewelry display board

Those of you who have been with me for awhile may recall my grandmother's enormous pin collection.

About a million years ago I also made a Breton stripe memo board from dollar store supplies.

Then about a thousand years later, I saw Jenny Komenda's modern art made from her grandmother's vintage buttons.

I kind of put it all together and arranged my grandmother's pins by color on my striped board.

Now I can look at and enjoy the pins every day (and easily pick one out to wear), which is a lot nice than having them sit in a box.

I also toyed with the idea of coral as ring display but kept giving myself scratches.
